Employing a Webmaster
Webmaster jobs are not advertised so frequently these days, and
many e-merchants do the work themselves. That can be a mistake.
Webmasters are responsible for the overall look and content of
the website, close to the editor's role in a newspaper or magazine.
Good webmasters are therefore unusual creatures, and perhaps

but your needs will go further than technical expertise. You'll
want the outstanding individual who can play a key role in liaising
between different departments and objectives.
It's a two way street. The successful candidate should be able

time and cost involved. And you should be able to spell out exactly
what your future plans entail, with some idea of budget available.
The dotcom downturn has made it a buyer's market, but webmasters
are still ambitious and creative people who want to be associated

Maintenance by the Web Design Company
Nonetheless, you may decide that budget and current needs do
not justify a full-time webmaster. Most web design companies will
offer to maintain the site for you, offering very reasonable terms.

contract. Web design companies make their money in building sites,
not in maintaining them.
Outsourcing to a Freelance Web Designer
Once you have the rates from your web design company, you may
wish to employ freelance consultants,
now more available with the downturn in the web design business.
Their rates may be cheaper, and they may agree to work on a weekly
or monthly renewal basis, which gives you considerable control.
Nonetheless, it's not an ideal solution as they'll have other
clients to serve, and won't give your site their undivided attention.
Moreover, the original web design company can make difficulties
— who's responsible for the site? — and refuse to hand
over control of key aspects. Get these matters tied down in the
first contract with the web design company.
