Submit Search Engines
How to market your site through the Internet's search engines.
Marketing with Search Engines
Submit search engines? That odd phrase illustrates what webmasters
often have to do: stuff their pages with keyword phrases friendly
to the directories and search engines. There's no alternative. 85%
of the 1 billion plus pages on the web are found this way. Your
options:
-
employ a professional search engine optimization company.
-
pay for a good ranking.
-
do the work yourself with special tools and online services.
-
submit for free and without tools.
We go into the matter properly in our e-book
but if lost sales are costing you thousands per month, then you'll
hand over to the professionals, listed on our resources
page.
Paying for Ranking
Originally, it was imperative to be listed in Yahoo and LookSmart,
both of which charged $299 for the privilege of being considered.
Much has changed in the last two years, but larger companies will
want to continue with both, paying Yahoo's $299 annual maintenance
fee.
Don't overlook:
- other pay-per-click search engines, where a fee (a few cents
to several dollars) is charged for each click-through. Details
on our resources page.
You can set the maximum monthly outlay.
- promotion through paid
ads on the search engines.
- free back-door submission, explained in our e-book.
DIY with Special Tools and Online Services
Given the costs of professional services, many webmasters do
their own ranking optimization, using software listed on our resources
page: the vendor sites explain what the software does and why.
Make sure you include Open Directory and the important
search engines in your submissions.
Manual Optimization and Submission
It's a lot of work, but you can get by without purchasing special
software. Our resources
page lists the free online services.
Optimizing your Site
Even if you employ professionals, you will have to optimize your
site for proper ranking by search engines and directories. The
e-book tells you how.
Submitting to Search Engines
Sites listed on the resources page cover the mechanics of submitting
to search engines and directories. In general you need to:
-
submit only the index page to the search directories.
-
Submit only the index page to Google and Fast/All the Web
search engines.
-
Submit all interior pages to the other search engines, but
not more than 5 pages/ site/day/search engine.
-
be patient: sites may take weeks or months to be indexed.
Only resubmit after a decent interval.
Taking It Further
We have noted only the main points of what is fast becoming an
arcane science. You'll need more. Resources in our e-book
therefore list additional sites for information, tips, news and
step-by-step tutorials show how we got Ecommerce Digest
into the top 5 ranking on Google, cheaply, against a competition
of 120 million competing sites.
