Merchantworkz is no longer what it was, but you'll find good listings of payment gateways and credit card processing services in the directories below. Both are now very numerous, so first make a shortlist of shopping cart programs.

Payment Gateways

All merchant account providers require some payment gateway for their services to be operational, and the lists that follow are far from exhaustive. They do list the payment gateways most widely used by both shopping carts and MAPs, however, and that therefore offer the greatest choice in setups.

Payment gateways come in two styles. 1. The simplest is code (usually a secure order form) that takes the customer to a third-party site for credit card processing and payment into the merchant's individual merchant account. 2. A merchant-side API is code integrated into the server hosting your site: more difficult to set up, but providing greater feed-back. Some companies also supply software to allow manual (offline) processing of orders taken on the website.

Remember that costs of payment gateways are usually additional to merchant account charges, and are levied in some combination of: license fee, setup fee, monthly charge (which may vary with volume of sales) and/or individual transaction charge.

Costs may also (and confusingly) vary with the merchant account provider, the country where your merchant account is held, and even the shopping cart (some shopping cart programs offer special deals). The figures given below are therefore only a rough guide: you must with your particular setup before making a final choice.

Very large numbers of payment gateways exist in the USA. Here is a very select list of the more popular, but remember that terms may be bettered by the payment gateway that comes with the merchant account provided by your local bank, or the gateways recommended by the shopping cart of your choice. Shop around.

1. site. Secure order form and merchant-side API. Usually bundled with merchant account, but can be bought separately. Also supplies an Express Merchant Account for small businesses.

2. site. Offer a variety of merchant services, including a payment gateway for US merchants through Link Point. Also offer a payment gateway for American and European merchants who hold a merchant account with First Atlantic Commerce.

3. site. Company has been acquired by Verisign, and Cybercash service replaced by Payflow systems. Inquire for details of fees.

4. site. Various options. Virtual LinkPoint operates on a secure order form. LinkPoint HTML is similar, and consists of a simple HTML add-on. LinkPoint API has to be integrated with the merchant's site but offers a more complete service. Prices on application.

5. site. Processes the major credit cards in 140 other currencies. Site has English, French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese versions, and lists the large number of shopping carts supported.

6. site. Provides various PKI (security) and brand management services. Payment gateway is the Verisign Payflow system.

7. site. Takes the major credit cards and handles payment in 120 currencies.

Choices are more restricted outside the USA, and this list includes payment gateways for some of the less popular shopping cart programs. Fee structure is provided on site in many cases.
