Internet and Education
A guide to 'internet and education' programs and services.
Learning by Computer
Distance learning programs are only the latest of the computer-assisted
learning techniques that have been with us for 30 years or more.
But education on the Internet now involves multimedia presentations
with real video and audio, plus the opportunity for students to
interact directly with the tutor almost like web conferencing,
in fact.
You can create online tutorials as commercial ezines
or newsletters, but the
software and services now available allow you to provide:
-
media-rich sites specifically aimed at tuition and training.
-
step-by-step pages with opportunities for testing and revision.
-
interaction between student and teacher.
-
Interaction between student and student.
-
further resources and reading as required by the student.
-
forms to automatically manage registrations and subscriptions.
Internet and Education: Software
The software existing to create your own lessons is listed on
our resources page.
They range from simple packages that convert text files to suitable
HTML pages to fully-featured programs like those from Macromedia
and Trainersoft. The last are very versatile and fully-featured
but of course expensive and time consuming to learn.
But you don't have to create state of the art sites. Content
is the all-important matter, plus the tutor behind the software,
who understands the students' difficulties and is happy to step
in and help. Get a colleague or would-be student to work through
the exercises before they go on line. Break the text into digestible
chunks. Be sure you know what each lesson is to achieve, and how
that learning can be consolidated.
If you're taking the simple, low-tech approach all you need do
is place the lessons in password-protected directories and install
some way of taking payment. Our ebook goes into all that, listing
services that have very low entrance costs.
Internet and Education: Learning Services
Not everyone wishes to learn programming on top of putting a
course together, and many companies can supply simple page-generating
software for distance learning that you host with them.
Some are purchased as separate modules for student, tutor and
course administrator, but many are fully integrated and allow
registration fees to be taken online.
Our resources page
lists the educational service providers, plus a few companies
that tailor courses for special needs.
You will want to see what Internet programs are already available
before entering into competition, and listings of such courses
are given in our resources
page. Download the e-book
for extensive listings.
