Some hundreds of storefront or shopping cart programs exist. The following offer reasonable or good value for money.

Simple Installation

Though these packages can be employed with little or no knowledge of HTML or programming, some familiarity with web design and build won't hurt. * indicates that pricing has been removed from site: you now need to inquire.

1. site. Actinic Catalog is $499. Fully-featured Actinic Business 7.0 shopping cart software with integrated links to Quickbooks and UPS tools is $1199.

8. site. Flexible shopping cart program for Windows platform. Comes with templates and layout editor. Usual shipping and tax facilities in various categories. Limited payment gateway support. $1995. Also a starter package for $40.

9. site. Good design and layout facilities; handles shipping, currencies and tax levels well; allows customization of HTML code. Adequate store management features: database can be exported in svs form. From £99.

10. site. A fully-featured set of modules at a competitive price. Requires PHP and MySQL database. From $99.

Requiring Some Programming

Many of these packages use wizards and/or templates in the storefront design stage, but some programming expertise is needed to get the best from them. * Indicates that pricing has been removed from site: you now need to inquire.

1. site. Very fully-featured backend package with inventory control and some customer relationship management facilities. Wide range of payment gateways. $1999.

2. site. Wizards and templates let you build storefronts quickly, but full customization will require use of the Cold Fusion that comes bundled with Developer. Backend facilities adequate, and can be extended with plug-in modules. Requires ColdFusion on server. Windows 2000 version $2995.

3. site. E-commerce software fully integrated with accounting and other backend packages. From $9995 for two licenses.

4. site. Catalogue builder with business to business features. Most backend facilities provided. Supports up to 10,000 products and site can run on NT or UNIX platform. 6. site. Windows-based shopping cart using ASP (Active Service Pages) technology to link with MS Access or SQLServer database. Basic backend functions but payment gateways limited to proprietary TPS or AuthorizeNet. Access version is $100. SQLServer version is $297.

7. site. Powerful suite of programs that runs on Windows or UNIX platforms with MS Access, SQLServer, Sybase or Oracle databases. Usual backend functions, with add-on for non-US tax requirements. Price on application.

8. site. Form-based HTML shopping cart that can be coded to operate with popular databases. $350.

9. site. A simple program to build online catalogs. Operates with MS Access, SQLServer, MySQL and Oracle databases. As provided, the package does not permit realtime credit card processing, but you may be able to code in your own payment gateways. Integrates with Quickbooks accounting package.

Either find a hosting company that supplies the system as part of its ecommerce package, or purchase and install on your own/dedicated server.

4. site. Well known suite of programs supplied to hosting companies that allow easy and sophisticated builds of ecommerce sites. Supports QuickBooks for seamless integration of orders and accounts. Marketed through partners listed on site.

5. site. Several products, from $595 per server license to $6,400 for RaQ 4i hosted edition. Very flexible, customizable and popular (over 60,000 installations.) Includes shopping cart, fulfillment, order and credit card processing, tax, shipping cost and multiple currencies.

6. site. Covers business-to-customer, business-to-business and advertising revenue. Handles multiple stores, but storefront facilities limited. Tax, shipping and real-time credit card processing not included. From $4,600 for 1 server license and 25 user licenses.
