Ecommerce Software Comparisons: Shopping Carts with Databases

Ecommerce software comparisons of shopping carts integrated with relational databases: our ebook has the Internet's largest listing and comparison of ecommerce shopping cart software and services.

Shopping Carts with Integrated Databases

Ecommerce software comparisons are important — to chose the right product and get value for money. The comparisons below are the most detailed on the Internet, and cover shopping carts/storefront programs that come integrated with relational databases.

Most shopping carts allow you to import product data via a proprietary file or flatfile database. What are listed here are shopping cart packages that work with relational databases. These give you more control — to upload particular parts of your products database, and to download purchase details from the website for later analysis by accounts and marketing. You can also query the database as an ad-hoc form of inventory control (shown in the table below only when specifically part of the shopping cart facility). Remember that:

  • though some packages are much better value than others, you generally get what you pay for. Inventory control, tax handling and shipping facilities come in various levels of sophistication and cost.

  • it's not easy to summarize the products of the larger software companies which offer shopping carts specific to a particular country or market. Carts supporting, say, the French language may support only those payment gateways likely to interest French merchants, and so on. Pursue your own inquiries from the indications in our table.

  • many suppliers and software companies are reluctant to provide full details of their products through their website or email inquiry, preferring to follow up the sales leads generated by inquiries from potential customers. Hence some of our entries.

  • though this now one of the most detailed shopping cart comparison on the Internet, it is not exhaustive. We have only listed products that:
    • appear reasonable value for money,
    • enjoy a large customer base, and/or
    • offer features not easily found elsewhere.

  • to handle multiple currencies you need:
    • a software package that can display the currencies (and languages) involved, plus
    • a suitable payment gateway / payment service provider / bank.

  • the market evolves rapidly, and products can be dropped or abruptly replaced. Check the company's record of support and upgrades.

  • The list below is not a definitive answer but a point of departure in your search for the optimal solution. You'll want to check out a software house before making one of its products the cornerstone of your own business — its history, financial standing and customer base. Also to get professional advice on the possibility of maintaining and/or extending the code in the event of the software house going out of business.
